In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the team of IPC practitioners that I was so lucky to work with were the epitome of strength and courage during an unprecedented time. They demonstrated outstanding teamwork and mutual support, our department expanded weekday and weekend hours, all in an effort to keep our patients and staff safe. An incredible person and teacher, the Director of Infection Control, who guided us through this very challenging time. No amount of preparation could have prepared us for what we experienced; the surge of patients, the complexity of the virus, the shortage of supplies, or the fear of what was next. The IPC team fielded calls from every department seeking guidance; we answered countless questions and provided support to all who needed it. Responding to the evolving CDC guidance was challenging and often required multiple education sessions with the staff. Nevertheless, through teamwork, communication and trust, the IPC team played an integral part in leading our staff through this most challenging time and most importantly doing it safely. COVID-19 left a footprint on us, it changed the IPC world and we are still navigating our way through that change. However, we became stronger and more united as a system. It is often said that the best view comes after the hardest climb.
