COVID-19 hit. My retirement went on hold. The challenges for a small, stand-alone hospital began. Thank God for years of certification and the experience of working during other public health crises.
The days were long, exhausting and yet inspiring. The teamwork was overwhelming and heartfelt as were unexpected partnerships with our community. Most inspirational were two immigrant physicians; Dr. Keshav Parthasarathy and Dr. Vinod Mohan who I had the privilege of working with. Our success in meeting the COVID challenges was their leadership, expertise and dedication. They put their lives on the line daily to serve our community. Each have worked in medically underserved communities for over a decade. They were named “Honorary Citizens of Gardner, MA”. It is embarrassing that these highly educated physicians have to wait decades for permanent citizenship in our USA. I pray they are granted citizenship soon and our community’s medical care is preserved for decades to come!
