1. Why did you choose a career in infection prevention and control?

I’ve always been passionate about patient safety, and infection prevention and control (IPC) felt like the perfect way to make a real difference. Early in my career, I saw how proper infection control measures could save lives—not just for patients, but for healthcare workers, visitors, and families. My IPC Director, Dr. Mahmoud Abouzeid, CIC, played a big role in inspiring me to pursue certification. Seeing his dedication to the field made me want to deepen my knowledge and contribute more meaningfully to my organization.

2. What advice would you give someone who is interested in an infection prevention and control career?

If you’re passionate about making healthcare safer, IPC is a great path. It’s a field where your efforts have a direct impact on patient outcomes. My advice? Be curious, ask questions, and seek mentorship from experienced professionals. IPC is always evolving, so a willingness to learn and adapt is key.

3. What does being a CIC® mean to you?

For me, becoming a CIC® is more than just a professional milestone—it’s a responsibility. It validates my knowledge and gives me the confidence to guide my colleagues in infection prevention best practices. Most importantly, it reassures me that the decisions I make are backed by evidence and aligned with global standards.

4. What was the best studying method for you when preparing for the initial certification examination?

I used a mix of study strategies—timed-practice exams, study guides read and understood at least 3 times, and discussions with experienced colleagues. Having a mentor like Dr. Mahmoud Abouzeid, CIC, was incredibly helpful. He encouraged me to not just memorize information but to truly understand how it is applied in our work. That made all the difference.

5. What advice would you give someone pursuing certification?

Believe in yourself and take it one step at a time. The exam can feel overwhelming, but with dedication and the right resources, you can do it. Surround yourself with supportive colleagues, practice applying concepts in your daily work, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.

6. How do you stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices?

I stay engaged by attending IPC conferences, reading the latest research, and following guidelines from APIC, Saudi Ministry of Health, JCI Standards and WHO. Networking with other infection prevention professionals also helps—it’s amazing how much you can learn just by sharing experiences and challenges with others in the field.

7. How has the CIC® helped you grow professionally and in your career?

Becoming CIC®-certified has been a game-changer for me. It’s given me more confidence in my role, expanded my opportunities for professional growth, and allowed me to take on greater leadership responsibilities. More importantly, it has strengthened my ability to advocate for infection prevention practices that truly make a difference in patient care.
