1. Why did you choose a career in infection prevention and control?

I chose a career in infection prevention and control because it allows me to directly contribute to patient safety and improve healthcare outcomes by reducing infection rates, minimizing hospital readmissions, and preventing long-term complications. This field offers the opportunity to collaborate with various healthcare professionals, ensuring comprehensive and effective patient care. Moreover, it provides continuous learning and professional development, keeping me engaged with the latest research and best practices. Ultimately, my passion for advocating high standards in healthcare and driving systemic improvements motivates me to excel in this critical role.

2. What advice would you give someone who is interested in an infection prevention and control career?

For someone interested in a career in infection prevention and control, my advice would be to focus on both education and practical experience. Start by obtaining a relevant degree in healthcare administration (quality management and patient safety, microbiology, public health, or nursing.  Engage in continuous learning to stay updated with the latest research, guidelines, and best practices in the field. Look for opportunities to gain hands-on experience by working in various healthcare settings, such as hospitals, clinics, or public health organizations, to understand the practical challenges and solutions in infection prevention. Finally, be passionate and proactive about patient safety and quality improvement, as these are the core drivers of success in infection prevention and control.

3. What does being a CIC® mean to you?

The CIC© designation is profoundly meaningful to me as it represents my dedication to ensuring the highest standards of quality and patient safety in healthcare, particularly within surgical services. Achieving this certification means I have acquired the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to effectively prevent and control infections, which is crucial for safeguarding patients undergoing surgical procedures. It underscores my commitment to continuous learning and staying abreast of the latest best practices and guidelines. The CIC© not only validates my expertise but also empowers me to contribute significantly to reducing infection rates, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing the overall safety of surgical environments.

4. What was the best studying method for you when preparing for the initial certification examination?  

The best studying method for me when preparing for the initial CIC© certification examination was to utilize a comprehensive approach that included the CIC Study Guide, AORN Guidelines for Perioperative Services, AAMI, HSPA Manual, CDC resources, and the Fundamental Statistics & Epidemiology. 

5. What advice would you give someone pursuing certification?

For someone pursuing CIC© certification, I recommend creating a detailed study plan that incorporates the APIC CIC Study Guide, AORN Guidelines for Perioperative Services, AAMI, WHO, HSPA Manual, CDC resources, and the Fundamental Statistics & Epidemiology. Balance your study sessions between reading these materials, taking practice exams, and engaging in hands-on experience to reinforce your knowledge. Joining study groups or forums can also provide support and additional insights. Prioritize understanding core concepts and their practical applications, and ensure you stay current with emerging trends and guidelines in infection prevention and control.

6. How do you stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices?  

I stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices by regularly reading peer-reviewed journals and attending professional conferences and webinars. Additionally, I actively participate in professional organizations such as APIC, AORN, IHI, HSPA, NAHQ, ASHRM follow updates from the CDC and WHO, and engage in continuous education through online courses and certifications.

7. How has the CIC® helped you grow professionally and in your career?

As a new CIC®, the certification has significantly enhanced my professionalism, credibility, and respect among colleagues. It has provided me with a deeper knowledge base and the confidence to implement best practices in infection prevention, earning me recognition as a trusted expert and opening up new career opportunities in healthcare.
