1. Why did you choose a career in infection prevention and control?

My decision to pursue a career in infection prevention and control was greatly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Being hired during this time opened my eyes to how crucial infection control is in safeguarding both healthcare workers and patients. The pandemic emphasized the importance of preventing the spread of infections, and I knew I wanted to contribute to this vital area of healthcare.

2. What advice would you give someone who is interested in an infection prevention and control career?

My advice would be to follow your heart. As healthcare professionals, our work is rooted in passion and compassion. While everything can be learned through education and experience, the drive and commitment to our craft must come from within. If you're passionate about making a difference, this career will be incredibly rewarding.

3. What does being a CIC® mean to you?

Earning the CIC® certification has been empowering for me. It provides me with the confidence and knowledge to effectively perform my daily duties as an infection control nurse. It’s a testament to my expertise and commitment to the field.

4. What was the best studying method for you when preparing for the initial certification examination?

I found that answering test questions was the most effective study method for me. I made sure to answer at least 100 questions daily, thoroughly reviewing each choice and rationale. This helped me better understand the material and reinforced my knowledge on specific topics.

5. What advice would you give someone pursuing certification?

Certification is a valuable career investment, so it’s important to dedicate time, effort, and resources to it. Don’t be discouraged by challenges along the way. Remember, the only time you truly fail is when you stop trying.

6. How do you stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices?

Staying up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices, I prioritize continuous learning through a hybrid methods. I regularly read peer-reviewed journals and trusted online resources related to infection control. I also attend conferences, webinars, and training sessions to gain insights from experts in the field and network with other professionals. Additionally, I participate in relevant professional organizations and review the latest guidelines from authoritative bodies such as the CDC and WHO and check national guidelines in my locations. This ongoing education ensures I’m always informed of the latest best practices and emerging trends in infection prevention.

8. How has the CIC® helped you grow professionally and in your career?

The CIC® certification has been instrumental in my professional growth. Not only has it boosted my confidence, but it has also provided a solid foundation for my practice. It has helped me better implement infection control protocols and refine my overall approach to infection prevention.
