- Why did you choose a career in infection prevention and control?
I chose a career in infection prevention and control (IPAC) because I’ve always been passionate about making a direct impact on the health and safety of vulnerable populations, especially in a long-term care setting. The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced the importance of IPAC measures, and I felt compelled to step up and play a key role in protecting both residents and staff. It’s a highly dynamic field that constantly challenges me to stay informed and innovate to ensure the highest standards of care and safety.
- What advice would you give someone who is interested in an infection prevention and control career?
I would advise anyone interested in this field to be patient, persistent, and proactive in their learning. IPAC requires a strong foundation in both science and practical application. Also, be prepared for continuous learning, as best practices and regulations evolve. Developing strong communication skills is key, as you’ll need to work with many different departments and individuals to implement effective strategies.
- What does being LTC-CIP® mean to you?
Being LTC-CIP is a huge honor and a responsibility that I take seriously. It means that I have the knowledge and expertise to effectively manage infection prevention in the long-term care setting and contribute to better outcomes for residents and staff. It’s a mark of professionalism that helps establish credibility and trust in my work.
- What was the best studying method for you when preparing for the initial certification examination?
The best studying method for me was breaking down the material into manageable sections and consistently reviewing and applying what I learned. I made sure to study both the theoretical concepts and their practical applications in a healthcare setting. Additionally, using practice exams to assess my understanding was key to feeling prepared.
- What advice would you give someone pursuing certification?
My advice would be to pace yourself and focus on understanding the principles of infection prevention rather than just memorizing content. Make sure to apply the knowledge to real-life scenarios, and don't hesitate to ask for support or resources when needed. It’s also important to dedicate time to studying consistently rather than cramming before the exam. Stay organized and give yourself time to process and review key concepts.
- How do you stay up-to-date on infection prevention and control practices?
Staying up-to-date involves regularly reviewing current research, attending professional development workshops, and participating in webinars related to infection prevention. I also rely on trusted resources like Public Health Ontario, the Ontario Ministry of Health, and infection prevention networks to stay informed about guidelines and recommendations. Networking with other IPAC professionals and collaborating on best practices is another great way to stay current.
7. How has the LTC-CIP® helped you grow professionally and in your career?
The LTC-CIP certification has opened many doors for me professionally. It has given me the confidence to lead IPAC initiatives in the nursing home, advocate for necessary resources, and educate staff on the importance of infection control. Professionally, it has enhanced my credibility and broadened my knowledge base, which allows me to have a bigger impact on resident care and safety. The certification has also provided me with a network of like-minded professionals who share valuable insights and experiences.
